From Brian D. Carr, Ph.D. Badge #1

In the Fall of 1984 my wife and I moved to Terre Haute in order for me to begin my doctoral studies. I had been active in my home chapter of Texas Beta at Texas Tech University and was hopeful that something could be started at I.S.U.

In the Fall of 1985 I placed an ad in the university newspaper advertising a new fraternity and "the opportunity to be a leader". As I recall we had 30+ men attend the meeting and the colony was born.

This young chapter quickly set a new standard for the local Greek community. We had social functions at the local catholic center, bringing in our own light show (including an 8 foot black lite). We pumped music through a large Fender guitar amp I had and the beat was solid.

It was in the Spring of 1986 that we moved into a walk up on Wabash avenue. The place was stale, largely abandoned and was adjoined to an area that had been burned. The A/C was insufficient, the bathroom slow, and the 2nd floor bounced up and down as we danced. Many memories are there for me...Woody falling asleep (possibly alcohol related) and being posed like a doll for the humor of the group...Barnes and Wertz pulling up their shirts and smashing into each other in the chapter room..."Boris" running the music...Eugene assaulting "impolite" male guests who did not show respect to our ladies...the infamous "tit bong" and chanting...bad beer and good times!

In March of 1987 I was allowed to call the roll of the 42 initiates of the colony into the mysteries of the larger Fraternity. It was in August of that year that I returned to Texas to complete my training and I now live in Lubbock, Texas. Although we all age I must say that the Indiana Eta Chapter will always enable me to return to my youth.

Fraternally, BDC...

One of our best events. You have to speak Malaysian to read it. We told all the girls it meant "live long and prosper".

Why Brother Carr lives in Texas!

There are more men in American college fraternities now than at any other time in their existence, since Phi Beta Kappa was formed at the College of William and Mary in 1776.

• Nearly four and one half million are members including more than 350,000 collegians on campuses throughout Canada and the United States.

• 68 NIC member fraternities have over 5,300 chapters and 405 colonies at over 800 colleges and universities.
